Speed Queen: Yes, It's That Good. Here's the Math Anyway.

Every week someone in my comments asks where Speed Queen is. Fair question, so here's the complete, no-hedging answer from someone who works on them.

Why Speed Queen deserves the hype

The TC5 is the last true old-school washer you can buy new: a metal transmission driving a real agitator independently of the tub, mechanical-style controls with no lid lock, and a frame built for laundromat duty. These machines are designed to finish even badly out-of-balance loads instead of erroring out. And the warranties tell you the company believes it: 5 years parts and labor on the TC5, 7 years on the TR7, in an industry where one year is standard. When a Speed Queen comes into my van, it's usually for a hose or a belt, not a board. The hype is earned.

Why it's not in my main rankings (the "sus" question)

Two honest reasons. First, mechanical: my rankings are built on Lowe's inventory, every pick links to a Lowe's listing, and Lowe's doesn't sell Speed Queen. It's sold through independent appliance dealers and retailers like AJ Madison. A machine I can't link isn't a machine I can rank. Second, philosophical: my picks optimize for what most families should actually spend, and that's where the math gets loud.

The math

A Speed Queen TC5 washer + DC5 dryer pair runs about $3,000 to $3,300 as a set. My base recommendation, the LG agitator top-load plus the LG 7.3 dryer, is about $1,140 at current sale prices. That means you could buy the entire LG set, wear it out completely, buy it again, wear that one out, and buy a third, before you've spent Speed Queen money. The LG set isn't a compromise, either: direct-drive motor with a 10-year motor warranty, and the dryer has 33,000+ reviews for a reason. For the Speed Queen to "win" financially, it has to outlast three consecutive LG sets. It's a great machine. That's still a hard bet.

And on dryers specifically. I'd take the LG anyway

Here's the part that surprises people: the Speed Queen washer is the star of that pair. The dryer is a fine, tough machine, but dryers are simple, and at that price you're paying commercial-build money for a category where the LG gives you better sensor-dry accuracy, quieter operation, and heating elements that in my logs simply don't fail (full dryer breakdown here). If you're splitting the difference: Speed Queen washer, LG dryer is a legitimate combo I've installed more than once.
