Speed Queen: Paying for Repairability and Long-Term Ownership

Who I think Speed Queen is for

Speed Queen makes the most sense to me if you repair your own machines, or you want something worth repairing long after you might have thrown another washer away.

You're paying a premium for that repairability and, especially with the TC5, the simpler approach to the machine. If your goal is to keep a washer going for 25 years, that means being willing to maintain it and replace parts along the way.

That is not a promise of 25 maintenance-free years. Things can still break. I see the value in being able to fix it and keep using it. Actual life depends on use, care, repair costs and parts availability.

What I mean by a 25-year machine

I mean a long ownership goal that includes maintenance and repairs. You may replace worn parts several times during that ownership. I would never promise that every machine will reach 25 years, or that every repair will make financial sense.

The appeal is having the option to keep repairing a machine when you might have replaced another one. Before buying, check local service and parts access, and decide whether you want to do those repairs yourself or pay a technician.

My best Speed Queen: the FF7

The FF7 front-loader is my pick for the best Speed Queen washer. Explore the FF7 and its matching DF7 dryer. The TC5 is the model I would start with if you specifically want the classic top-load design.

When I would choose the TC5

The TC5's classic agitator wash system and straightforward controls are the draw for me. It has no lid lock and a five-year parts-and-labor warranty under the manufacturer's terms. The TR7 has a different wash system and electronic controls; the brand name alone does not make every model the same choice.

Is the premium worth it?

It can be, if repairability and keeping the same machine matter enough to you. A lower-priced washer can still be a sensible buy. Compare today's purchase price, your expected use, and the cost of future repairs. A longer ownership goal does not automatically make the more expensive machine the cheapest one to own.

You also do not have to buy a matching pair. A Speed Queen washer with a different dryer can make sense if it suits your budget and laundry room.
