The Most Reliable Appliance Brands, According to 33,000 Service Calls

Short version: LG makes the most reliable mainstream laundry, Bosch owns dishwashers, GE is the safest bet in refrigerators, and the fewer gadgets an appliance has, the longer it lives. That's what I see in the field, and the service-call data agrees.

I don't get paid to like any of these brands. I get paid when they break. After 15 years running an appliance repair company, you develop strong opinions about what's worth buying, but opinions are cheap, so I cross-checked mine against the biggest public service datasets that exist: Yale Appliance's 33,190 first-year service calls and Consumer Reports' owner surveys.

Here's what the service-call data looks like. Lower is better, it's the percentage of units that needed a repair in their first year:

LG: buy the laundry, think twice on the fridge

LG's 5.5% service rate is the best of any full-line brand, and most of that is carried by their washers. Yale calls LG front-loads "among our lowest-serviced products for years," and Consumer Reports rates LG the most reliable brand for both front-load and top-load HE washers. That matches my vans exactly: we almost never get called out for an LG direct-drive washer that's under five years old.

The fridge story is different. LG refrigeration is average, the linear compressor issues are mostly behind them, but french-door units with door ice systems still generate calls. If you want LG, get it in the laundry room first.

Bosch: the dishwasher company

Bosch dishwashers run a 3.7% service rate, fewer than 4 out of 100 need any service in year one. Nothing else mainstream touches that. What I tell customers: buy the 300 Series and you get the same core wash system as the $1,400 models. What I don't tell customers to buy is Bosch refrigeration, you're paying dishwasher-reputation prices for the most repair-prone appliance category there is.

GE: the boring answer that keeps being right

GE doesn't win spec-sheet battles. What they win is parts availability, a national service network, and top-freezer refrigerators they've built roughly the same way for 25 years. When a landlord asks me what fridge to put in a unit, the answer is usually a GE or LG top-mount, no door dispenser, no drama.

The pattern underneath all of it

Refrigerator ice makers are the single biggest failure point in modern appliances. Consumer Reports found 31% of fridges with ice makers have a problem by year five. Pro-style ranges are second, mostly igniters. The rule that never fails me: every feature you add is a future service call. Buy the simple version of a good brand and it outlives the fancy version of a great one.

One more honest note: brand matters less than people think, and service matters more. The best appliance is one somebody in your area can actually fix. That's a big part of why I stick to brands Lowe's carries, parts and techs exist everywhere.

This take also lines up with what working techs on YouTube are seeing, Bens Appliances and Junk is worth your time if you want teardown-level detail.
