If you've heard "never buy an LG fridge, the compressor dies," that advice was earned. It's also out of date. Here's the whole story from someone who replaced those compressors for a living.
The linear compressor era, and what actually broke
From roughly 2014 on, LG bet big on the linear compressor: instead of a motor spinning a crankshaft, an electromagnet shoved a piston back and forth directly. Fewer rotating parts on paper. In practice, the piston seal wore down and lost pressure, often well before the five-year mark. When that seal goes, the compressor runs but can't move refrigerant, so the fridge hums along while everything inside warms to room temperature. A class action claimed nearly 1.6 million fridges were at risk, and in 2020 LG settled, extending compressor coverage to 10 years parts and 5 years labor on the affected models. I did a lot of those swaps. The replacement compressors were better than the originals, but the design itself was the problem.
What LG changed
Quietly, and without much of an apology tour, LG moved its new refrigerator platforms to the smart inverter compressor. This is not the linear design with a new sticker. It's a conventional, crank-driven compressor architecture, the same basic layout the industry has trusted for decades, paired with a variable-speed inverter motor that ramps up and down instead of slamming on and off. You can see it on current models: ask about a new LG like the LF-series French doors and the answer is smart inverter, not linear. From the service side of the counter: these are the boring, durable kind of compressor. Boring is exactly what you want in a fridge.
How to tell which one you're buying: check the badge
LG puts the compressor badge right on the door sticker and the spec sheet. These are my recreations of the two marks so you know what to scan for in the store:

The other quiet upgrade: a simpler cooling loop
The compressor gets the headlines, but LG also simplified the rest of the sealed system on its new platforms. Many linear-era French doors ran dual-evaporator "Smart Cooling Plus" layouts: two coils, more sensors, more defrost logic, more things for me to diagnose at $150 a visit. Current models have largely gone back to a single evaporator with managed airflow, and LG's own listings confirm it: shoppers asking whether new models are dual-evap get told no by LG's spec sheet. Fewer coils, fewer sensors, fewer defrost failure points. As a rule I tell customers: every part a fridge doesn't have is a part I never charge you to replace.
Fair is fair
Two things the other side of this argument gets right. First, some owners and techs argue the smart inverter name is partly a rebrand exercise to escape the linear reputation, and LG certainly hasn't gone out of its way to advertise the change. Second, the linear compressor's later years weren't as bad as the internet remembers: Yale Appliance's service data shows only about 1.2% of the LG fridges they sold from 2018 to 2024 needed a compressor, and LG has ranked among the most reliable brands they track. So a late linear unit isn't a time bomb. But when the new design is simpler, quieter, and sitting next to it at the same price, there's no reason to buy the old architecture. One warranty note: the 10-year sticker covers the compressor part, and labor is only fully covered in the early years, so keep your receipt either way.
