A dryer is a metal drum, a motor, a heat source, and something to time it all. That simplicity is why dryers outlive washers, and why, when they do fail, it's almost always one of the same four things.
Failure #1: the heating circuit
Heat problems are the king of dryer calls, roughly 38% of all dryer repairs, with the vast majority tracing to the heating element, thermal fuse, or cycling thermostat. Here's the part nobody tells you: the thermal fuse usually blows because your vent is clogged. The dryer overheats behind a wall of lint, the fuse does its job, and the "broken dryer" was actually a fire prevented. On element design, I'll say what my logs say: the LG electric dryers I service almost never come in for elements. Their coil design and sensor placement run cooler, and it shows up as elements that just… keep working. Elements on some other brands are practically a subscription.
Failure #2: the rolling hardware, every brand, eventually
The drum rides on small wheels, literally like roller-skate wheels, and a belt spins it. These are honest wear parts on every brand ever made: belts run 8 to 12 years, rollers about the same but faster under heavy loads. The tell is a rhythmic thump-thump-thump with every revolution, a flat spot on a roller. LG's newer roller design is a genuine improvement here, but I want to be straight: rollers wearing out isn't a defect anywhere. It's brake pads. The question is only how many years you get and how cheap the part is, and roller kits are $20-40 parts on most machines.
Failure #3: the timer isn't what your mom's dryer had
Old dryers had a mechanical timer, a little motor advancing a camshaft, built like a tank, running 25 years. Modern dryers replaced that with electronic controls, and timer and control failures now stop dryers from starting or shutting off, at $50 to 150 for the part alone. This is the trade the whole industry made: sensor-dry convenience for control boards that fail in ways a camshaft never did. It's also why my rental advice is always the simplest control panel you can buy.
The 10-minute habit that outperforms any brand choice
Fair is fair
Dryer reliability is more uniform across brands than washers, technicians broadly agree the technology is simple enough that no mainstream brand builds a bad one, and the heat-pump dryers from LG, Bosch, and Miele trade higher efficiency for more service complexity. My LG lean is about elements that don't fail, sensor-dry that actually senses, and parts in days, not about anyone else building junk. Buy whatever matches your washer; just clean the vent.
